Until now many cities in Indonesia had no parks or public spaces to work out, furthermore the streets are full of cars, motorbikes and it’s hard to find sidewalks to exercise. The food is also not helping at all because everything cheap contains too much sugar or it’s fried. These reasons had encourage some “teams” to act.
Coca Cola in Indonesia, for example, has created a big project called “Indonesia Segar“. They have been working together with the government to aware doctors that exercise means medicine. They have also been providing education to many schools as well as building “sport stations“.
These parks will open soon in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Bali and some other cities.
There is another community in Bandung that exists since two years ago and has reunited 300 members already. They have proven that we don’t really need much tools to work out and to shape our body, but our own body weight and we can do it for free.
That community is called Barstard “Bandung street work out addict”. It’s a young group of both boys and girls that meet up to train together, which is definitely more fun than going to the gym.
They use a method called calisthenics that consists of gross motor movements without using much equipment, just bars sometimes. They train in Saparua park everyday at 5pm and during the weekends at 8am.
All of the trainers use body-weight training, pulling or pushing up and jumping to increase the strenght and the whole body fitness.
We joined Barstard during the last week and it was awesome and really fun. Ilham Pratama, (the usual trainer for girls) is a passionate for sport, for that project and he believes in calisthenics so he encourages everyone to try it. Follow them or contact them on Twitter and Instagram: @barstardbdg.
